When Cato says “Go on. I’m dead anyway. I always was, right?”, it shows that in his last moments, Cato was a person capable of feeling human compassion. This scene allowed the audience to enter the psychotic mind of the career from District 2. It showed that the Hunger Games changed even the most cruel of tributes. He is almost pleading for Katniss to end his life, and when he considers himself dead, he is referring to his inhuman state due to all the lives he has taken. Poor brutal, bloody Cato was finally driven mad, but not in the expected way. He was already a mad killer, and this was a new kind of insanity; the kind that eats you alive: guilt.
